Hybrid/PHEV and EV Classes

7 Day Hybrid/EV Master Class

Our most popular class. Employing a combination of in-class and hands-on learning, students will be exposed to a variety of Hybrid and Electric vehicles. Hybrid operation and special service modes are discussed and demonstrated. Proper “known-good” operational characteristics of different Hybrid and EVs will be discussed. Many will be demonstrated on the road, to provide the necessary familiarity to help determine when a system is operating incorrectly or incorrectly. High voltage safety and PPE will be discussed in the classroom and demonstrated/employed in the live shop environment. Any necessary diagnostic equipment is provided for use during class. Tools and equipment necessary to service high voltage systems are discussed, as are the required specifications of those same tools and equipment for high voltage use. Class “0” high voltage glove kits are provided to and become the property of each student.

Major components and systems are discussed, demonstrated, and tested in the vehicle. Propulsion, braking, steering, thermal management, and climate control are all broken down into theory and operation. Many are also tested “on the bench” when practical. Test equipment used includes Lab Scopes, Scan Tools and DVOMs. Hybrid/EV specific tools are also demonstrated.

Many major component props are disassembled to demonstrate their operation and common faults. Students gather and record “known good” data using live vehicles and parts, which they take away for use in their shop.

Common service procedures and maintenance required on many systems are discussed and performed to aid technicians in their shop and to increase profitability.

4 Day Hybrid

4 Day EV

Other

2 Day Battery Pack Diagnosis and Repair (coming soon)

Some battery packs have been serviceable for many years. Though some newer BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) battery packs cannot be repaired, many manufacturers are designing and building their battery packs to be repairable in the field.
Technicians will acquire “Known Good” data from battery packs which will be evaluated on the road and on the workbench. Using DVOMs, scan data and lab scope data, students will become familiar with capable units. Failing battery packs will then be introduced, road tested, removed, bench tested and diagnosed. Repair and cell/module balancing are carried out.
NiMH upgrades using Lithium based cells are also discussed.

3 Day Tesla EV (in development)

Prerequisite – 7 Day Master Class or one of our four day Hybrid or EV classes. This course is three days of hand-on learning on Tesla models. High and low voltage systems unique to Tesla vehicles will be explored, tested, and diagnosed. Systems maintenance opportunities will identified and discussed. Students will gather known good, dynamic information to take with them for future use. Charger operation and Supercharging are discussed in depth. Accessing service information and factory scan tool use are discussed, accessed, and demonstrated.

F-150 Lightning EV (in development)

Prerequisite – 7 Day Master Class or one of our four day Hybrid or EV classes. This “platform specific” class will fully explore the unique systems of the F150 Lightning EV. High voltage propulsion and accessory systems will be put through their paces and tested using scan tools, DVOM and lab scope data acquisition. Students compile known good data and experience to take with them. Regular maintenance opportunities and pattern failures are identified and discussed. Vehicle charging is explained and tested. Ford’s “Intelligent Backup Power” system is also explained in detail.

Silverado EV (in development)

Prerequisite – 7 Day Master Class or one of our four day Hybrid or EV classes. This “platform specific” class will fully explore the unique systems of GM’s Silverado EV. High voltage propulsion and accessory systems will be put through their paces and tested using scan tools, DVOM and lab scope data acquisition. Students compile known-good data and experience to take with them. Regular maintenance opportunities and pattern failures are identified and discussed. Vehicle charging is explained and tested.
